Oath Of Office by: Michael Palmer
Oath of Office
by: Michael Palmer
I won this book on a LibraryThing giveaway
A man going on a killing spree of 7 people then turning the gun on himself is not unheard of in today's society. It’s sad but true. This book touches on a conspiracy revolving around this incident which even reaches to the President of the United States.
I don’t want to give to much away so I’ll add my thoughts on it. The characters are believable people and I love that the main character, Dr. Lou Welcome, doesn’t just believe what he’s told even when the facts are so hard to dispute. I read this book in one day into the wee hours. I couldn’t put it down and I never do that. But I should warn you that because of the subject of this book and how true to life it could be, it can be unsettling to think it may actually be happening in the real world today.
I normally am not really found of crime novel or conspiracy novels so to speak. I like them, but they are usually not my favorites. I have to say that this one has changed my mind on that. I know I can only give it 5 stars but I really think it deserves more. What really sucked me into this book is that it could really happen today (if it hasn’t already). If you have a chance to read this, I highly recommend it.

The Paranormal Posse give `ghost tours' for everyday people wanting to experience the paranormal. The real activity starts when they start to investigate and give an overnight tour at an old haunted hotel called the Amador. There are several layers to this story. There is the ghost activity, but there is a family crisis with one of the investigators. There is even a tragic surprise in the end. I don't want to give away the story, so I'll leave it at that. |
A Life of Bright Ideas by: Sandra Kring
A Life of Bright Ideas: A Novel
by: Sandra Kring
I won this book on Goodreads/First Reads
I can't say enough about how much I liked this book. It brings up so many things. Sandra Kring does such a wonderful job writting such great characters. I kept reading this character and that character and thinking "I have an aunt just like that" and "I remember when so-and-so did that" and "my mother" use to say things like that. It really touches your heart. This book is about friends finding each other again and finding ones way of making sense of the world and becoming grown-up.
I highly recommend this book to anyone. You will certainly enjoy it and if your family is anything like mine, you will definitely relate to all the characters.

The characters are believable in this novel, they could be anyone you know in your own life. This book takes you through a tragic childhood of Joleens, a marriage to Micheal that has disintegrated over the years, the struggles that come with children, the tragedies of war, the loss of a personal friend, and the list goes on. I loved the depth of characters in this book. It's heart wrenching to read how service men and women have to deal with the challenges of war and it's effects on their families after they get home. This book is about trying to repair torn relationships dispite how bad things have become and making decissions at the crossroads in their lives. This is a great book and I highly recommend it. |
Far From Here by:Nicole Baart
Far From Here
by: Nicole Baart
I won this book from Goodreads/First Reads
This novel is about a couple, Dani and Etsell, who marry young and seem to have the perfect romance. He's a pilot and Dani has a fear of flying. Etsell gets an opertunity to make a trip flying to Alaska and ends up missing. After a week the search is called off and Dani is left to figure out the pieces of what she thought was her life.
Dani makes a trip to Alaska herself after the search is called off to try to find answers for herself. This is where she learns that her husband may have had secrets she never knew about and her life may not have been as "perfect" as she may have believed. Dani has to try to come to terms with everything she learns and this book is about her jouney to do that.
The author has added so much into this book. You get a real sense of her heartache and turmoil. The quirkiness of family. Some of the troubles from marrying so young, anger and disbelief of finding out your loved ones may not be what you have believed them to be. Baart really touches on the little details of a situation like this that could have easily been left out but really help you feel the pain of loss and confussion that you would be confronted with at a time like this.
There are other questions that she has to figure out also. How soon to start a new relationship and even how some decisions effect others even after we're gone. This is a great read and one that I'd recommend highly. Great Book!

Snow Child by: Eowyn Ivey
I won this book from goodreads/first Reads
I have to say this book is a wonderful book. I believe this is a debut novel of Eowyn Ivey and I can't wait for the next. I enjoyed this book so much.
Snow Child begins with a couple who are starting a new life in Alaska. The couple have some things from their past that are making it hard to cope and decide that a new adventure may be what they need to get them through it. But Alaska goes from hard to harder with all the struggles that come with it. Seclusion and the hard work and the cold climate make harder on them.
One evening they decide to build a snow child as a means of finding a small amount of joy in this otherwise joyless kind of existance they've made for themselves. When they begin seeing a child hiding in the woods, the story begins to take you on a different course that resembles an old Russian Fairy Tale that Mabel, one of the main characters, was read over and over as a child.
The story continues with twists and turns that make Jack, Mabel and the snow child a real family and find some happiness and some sorrow. I hope I haven't given away to much of the story so I'll stop there.
I very highly recommend this book to anyone. Adults and Young adults. You won't regret reading it. I gave it 5 stars and plan to read it again.
